Root mealybug

Systematics: Rhizoecus cacticans belongs to the family Pseudococcidae, order Hemiptera. Unlike common foliar mealybugs, this species is specialized for a subterranean lifestyle. These tiny insects are distinguished by their pale, oval bodies covered in a waxy, flour-like substance that acts as a physical barrier against desiccation and many topical chemical applications.

Host range: This pest is particularly problematic for cacti and a wide range of indoor succulent plants. Because they inhabit the root zone, they often go unnoticed until the plant shows clear signs of decline. Greenhouse collections and indoor plant displays are highly susceptible to infestation due to the controlled, often dry environment that these pests prefer.

Life cycle: The lifecycle of Rhizoecus cacticans is tightly associated with the root system. Females produce egg sacs filled with white waxy filaments, often found clinging to the soil particles or the roots themselves. Nymphs (crawlers) emerge and migrate rapidly to find new feeding sites, often spreading between pots through drainage holes or shared irrigation trays.

Damage and impact: The damage is caused by the insect feeding on sap, which disrupts nutrient uptake and causes severe root damage. Infested plants typically exhibit stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and a general lack of vigor. In advanced cases, the roots lose their functionality, and the plant can be easily pulled out of the soil because the root system has essentially died off.

• Always inspect the root ball of new plants before introducing them to your collection.
• Use systemic soil-applied insecticides to treat confirmed infestations.
• Repot plants using fresh, sterile potting mix to remove potential eggs.
• Discard heavily infested plants to prevent the spread to other specimens.
• Ensure good drainage to prevent the specific dry conditions that favor these pests.
