Big-eyed bugs (genus Geocoris) belong to the family Geocoridae, which is part of the order Hemiptera. These insects are widely recognized in agricultural research due to their complex behavior; while primarily functioning as beneficial predators of various agricultural pests, they can occasionally exhibit phytophagous behavior, causing damage to crops when prey populations are low.

The life cycle of Geocoris includes the egg, five nymphal stages, and the adult stage. They are characterized by their prominent, bulging eyes, which facilitate excellent visual perception for hunting small insects such as aphids, mites, and leafhopper eggs. Adults typically overwinter in plant debris or soil, allowing them to emerge early in the spring.

Crops most susceptible to potential damage by these insects include cotton, soybeans, corn, and various garden vegetables. In scenarios where prey is scarce, Geocoris bugs pierce plant tissues to extract sap. This feeding behavior can lead to localized necrosis, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the transmission of secondary plant diseases.

The main signs of damage are characteristic light-colored pinprick spots on foliage, which occur where the bug has inserted its mouthparts. While the direct damage to crops can be detrimental, it is critical to balance this against the economic value of Geocoris as a major natural control agent for more destructive pests like spider mites and thrips.
