Isthmocoris is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Geocoridae (big-eyed bugs). These insects are found in various agricultural landscapes, acting primarily as phytophagous pests that can cause economic damage to cultivated plants. Understanding their behavior is essential for effective integrated pest management strategies.

The pest primarily infests cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and rye, although it can also be found on legumes and various weed species. During periods of high population density, these bugs feed on plant sap, targeting both seedlings and the reproductive organs, which significantly impairs the plant's overall vitality and growth potential.

The biology and development of Isthmocoris follow the standard life cycle of geocorid bugs. Adults typically overwinter in the topsoil or under crop residues. Upon the arrival of favorable spring temperatures, they migrate to young crops. The life cycle progresses through the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and finally, the adult stage, with nymphs resembling smaller, wingless versions of the adults.

The harmful impact is exacerbated during drought conditions, as stressed plants are less capable of resisting the toxic effects of the bug's saliva. In grain crops, damage to the heads often results in shriveled kernels and reduced yield weight.

Cultural practices, such as deep autumn plowing to disturb overwintering sites and diligent weed management, are the first line of defense.
