Glenea fasciata

Glenea fasciata is a wood-boring beetle species belonging to the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles, within the order Coleoptera. This insect is recognized as a significant pest that impacts various woody plants, often causing substantial damage in orchards, forests, and ornamental landscapes.

The host range of Glenea fasciata primarily includes various deciduous trees. The larvae are the stage of the lifecycle responsible for the most severe damage, as they burrow into the cambium and xylem of branches and trunks. This activity disrupts the transport of nutrients and water, often leading to canopy dieback or the structural failure of the infested tree.

The biology and lifecycle of this beetle are characterized by four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults typically emerge in late spring or summer, feeding on foliage and tender bark before mating. Females deposit eggs into cracks or crevices in the bark, where the emerging larvae immediately begin boring into the plant tissue, remaining protected inside the wood for several months.

Damage symptoms often include entry/exit holes on the bark and piles of frass (boring dust) at the base of the plant. As larvae mature, their tunnels become more extensive, significantly weakening the tree's health. Infested plants may show signs of yellowing, wilting, and increased susceptibility to fungal diseases or secondary pests, ultimately reducing the tree's lifespan and productivity.

Effective management and control measures include:

• Early detection through regular tree inspections and monitoring of boring dust.
• Sanitation pruning and immediate removal of heavily infested branches or trees.
• Application of systemic insecticides during adult activity periods to prevent oviposition.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization, watering, and soil management to increase natural resistance.
