The primary damage is caused by the larvae of the beetle. Upon hatching from eggs laid by females on the tree bark, the larvae bore into the woody tissue. They consume the internal structure of the stem, creating tunnels that disrupt the plant's vascular system, which is essential for transporting nutrients and water throughout the tree.

The biological lifecycle of Glenea gabonica consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The lifecycle length is highly influenced by ambient temperature and humidity levels common in its tropical habitat.
