Glenea indiana

Glenea indiana is a wood-boring beetle species belonging to the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles or wood borers. Within the order Coleoptera, this insect is recognized as a significant pest, particularly in tropical and subtropical orchard ecosystems, where it can cause substantial economic losses to fruit production.

This pest primarily attacks various species of fruit-bearing trees, with a strong preference for members of the Rosaceae family, such as apple and pear trees. While it is naturally occurring in forest environments, its transition to cultivated orchards makes it a concern for agricultural authorities and orchard managers aiming to maintain tree health.

The life cycle of this beetle follows a complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles are primarily active during the warmer months, feeding on young bark and leaves. Eggs are deposited into crevices in the tree bark, after which the larvae tunnel into the xylem. These larvae remain inside the branches or trunks, consuming woody tissue and creating extensive galleries that compromise the structure of the tree.

The damage caused by Glenea indiana is often detected too late. The internal tunneling restricts the transport of water and nutrients, leading to progressive branch dieback, yellowing leaves, and in severe cases, the death of the entire tree. Furthermore, the boreholes created by the larvae provide entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, further weakening the tree.

Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach focused on prevention and eradication. The following strategies are recommended for control:

• Regular inspection for early signs of infestation such as boreholes and frass.
• Sanitary pruning and destruction of infested branches to remove larvae.
• Application of systemic insecticides at the peak of adult emergence.
• Maintenance of tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation.
