Nine-spotted glenea
Glenea novemguttata
Description
The Nine-spotted glenea (Glenea novemguttata) is a species of longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae) known to cause significant damage to various woody plants. Classified as a stem borer, this insect is a serious threat in its native range, where its larvae tunnel deep into the wood of deciduous trees and shrubs.
The host range of Glenea novemguttata includes various forest and orchard trees. By boring into the cambium and xylem, the larvae disrupt the vascular system of the plant. This feeding activity is particularly damaging to young plants and nursery stock, which may be girdled and eventually killed by the larvae.
The biological cycle of this beetle involves egg-laying on the bark, followed by larval development within the woody tissues. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae begin their tunneling, creating galleries that persist throughout their development. This internal damage often goes unnoticed until the exterior signs of infestation become obvious, such as wilting or dieback of branches.
The main signs of infestation include exit holes on the trunk or branches and frass accumulation at the base of the tree. The physical damage to the wood weakens the structure of the tree, making it prone to snapping in high winds. Furthermore, the tunnels created by the larvae serve as entry points for secondary pathogens and wood-decay fungi, accelerating the tree's decline.
Effective management strategies for Glenea novemguttata require a multi-faceted approach to pest control:
- Sanitation pruning by removing and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local populations.
- Monitoring the flight activity of adult beetles using visual cues or specific attractants.
- Applying systemic insecticides to the trunk and branches during the active egg-laying season.
- Promoting tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to help trees withstand minor infestations.
