Taxonomic position: Globodera achilleae belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Heteroderidae. It is a cyst-forming nematode, characterized by the female's ability to transform into a persistent protective cyst, which ensures the survival of eggs under adverse environmental conditions.
Host range: The primary host of this nematode is the common yarrow (Achillea millefolium). While it shows a high degree of host specificity, the pest can also inhabit the root systems of various related species within the Asteraceae family, which serve as natural reservoirs for the population.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves the transformation of eggs into infective second-stage juveniles (J2) that emerge from the protective cyst.
