Gluphisia is a genus of moths belonging to the Notodontidae family, within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are known for their association with various deciduous trees, where their larvae serve as primary defoliators in forest environments and ornamental plantings.

The primary hosts for Gluphisia species are poplars (Populus spp.) and occasionally willows (Salix spp.). The larvae exhibit voracious feeding habits, which can lead to significant foliage loss in forest nurseries and fast-growing timber plantations, impacting the overall health and economic value of the trees.

The biological cycle of Gluphisia typically involves several generations per year, depending on the latitude and local climate. Overwintering occurs in the pupal stage, usually within a silken cocoon hidden in leaf litter or crevices in the bark. Adults emerge in spring, with subsequent larval stages peaking during the summer months.

The damage caused by these pests is characterized by leaf skeletonization in early larval stages, evolving into total leaf consumption as the caterpillars grow. Heavy infestations lead to extensive defoliation, which causes physiological stress to the trees, reduces annual growth increment, and weakens them against subsequent attacks by secondary pests or environmental factors.
