Description

Systematic position. The Cocksfoot moth (Glyphipteryx simpliciella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Glyphipterigidae. It is a small moth species that has evolved to exploit the reproductive structures of specific forage grasses, making it a significant challenge for seed production farms.

Affected crops. The primary host plant for this pest is Cocksfoot or Orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata). By feeding on the inflorescences, the larvae directly impact the seed yield, which is critical for agricultural operations focusing on grass seed multiplication.

Biology and life cycle. Adults are diurnal, being most active on sunny days. After mating, females deposit eggs on the developing flower heads of the host grass. The hatching larvae burrow directly into the florets, where they feed on the developing seeds and internal tissues, completing their larval development within the protection of the spikelet.

Damage and pest status. The economic damage caused by Glyphipteryx simpliciella is primarily the reduction of viable seed quantity and quality. The larvae hollow out the seeds, leaving empty husks that are often difficult to detect during harvest without specialized screening, leading to significant financial losses for seed producers.
