These insects are significant wood-boring pests that primarily infest various hardwood species. These pests primarily target deciduous trees, including oak, hickory, elm, and chestnut. While they often infest weakened, stressed, or declining trees, they can also attack healthy trees during periods of high population density. The presence of the beetle can lead to significant physiological decline, making the tree susceptible to other biotic and abiotic stressors.

After pupating, the adult beetle chews its way to the surface, leaving behind distinctive round exit holes.

This mechanical damage severely weakens the structural integrity of the trunk and branches. In addition to structural decline, the open tunnels serve as entry points for decay fungi, leading to wood rot and eventual stem breakage.
