White oak borer

Goes tigrinus

Description

The White oak borer (Goes tigrinus) is a significant wood-boring beetle belonging to the Cerambycidae family within the order Coleoptera. This species is native to North America and is widely recognized as a serious pest of various hardwood trees, capable of causing extensive damage to timber resources and urban landscaping trees.

The primary hosts of this beetle are species of the genus Quercus (oaks), particularly white oaks, though it can also infest hickory and other broad-leaved trees. The larvae are notorious for boring deep into the heartwood of the tree, which distinguishes them from many other secondary bark beetles that only feed in the cambium layer.

The life cycle of Goes tigrinus is complex and typically lasts from three to five years. Adult beetles emerge in the summer months to mate and deposit eggs under the bark of suitable host trees. Once hatched, the larvae immediately begin their lengthy period of development, excavating large, irregular galleries within the tree trunk or branches.

The damage caused by the larvae is severe and often irreversible. By tunneling through the wood, the larvae disrupt the vascular system of the host, leading to branch dieback, crown thinning, and eventually the death of the tree. The structural integrity of the wood is compromised, and the galleries facilitate the entry of decay-causing fungi, further accelerating the decline of the tree.

Effective management and control of the White oak borer require a multi-faceted approach centered on forest hygiene and preventative measures:

  • Regular inspection of trees to detect early signs of infestation, such as frass or oviposition scars.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of heavily infested trees to reduce the local beetle population.
  • Maintaining tree vigor through proper watering, fertilization, and site management to prevent successful attacks.
  • Monitoring adult beetle activity during the summer flight period using traps to determine the timing of potential insecticide applications if necessary.
