Banded wood borer

Graphisurus fasciatus

Description

Systematic position: Graphisurus fasciatus (synonym Acanthocinus fasciatus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorned beetles. This species is recognized for its larvae's ability to bore into the wood of deciduous trees, making it a subject of interest in both forestry and entomological studies.

Host plants: The pest primarily targets stressed, dying, or recently fallen deciduous trees. Preferred hosts include species within the genera Quercus (oak), Acer (maple), Castanea (chestnut), and Fraxinus (ash). In orchard environments or tree nurseries, it can become a localized nuisance if sanitation practices are not strictly maintained.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle generally spans one to two years depending on environmental conditions. Adult beetles emerge during the summer months to mate and deposit eggs within bark crevices. Upon hatching, larvae immediately bore into the subcortical layers, consuming the inner bark and cambium, eventually tunneling deeper into the sapwood to pupate before emerging as adults.

Damage and economic significance: The damage is primarily caused by larval feeding galleries, which girdle the tree by severing the vascular tissue (phloem and cambium). This disruption of water and nutrient transport leads to branch dieback and, in severe cases, tree mortality. Additionally, these exit and entry holes facilitate the entry of secondary wood-decay fungi, compromising the structural integrity of the timber.

Effective management strategies focus on prevention and sanitation:

  • Regular monitoring of tree health to detect signs of infestation.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of fallen, dead, or infested trees to destroy breeding sites.
  • Maintaining optimal tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation.
  • Chemical treatments of stored lumber or high-value trees using systemic or contact insecticides during adult flight periods.
