Description
The genus Grapholita belongs to the Tortricidae family within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are recognized as major agricultural pests, specifically targeting fruit trees. Their larvae cause significant economic damage by compromising the structural integrity and quality of both soft and pome fruits.
The most infamous species in this genus include the oriental fruit moth (Grapholita molesta) and the plum fruit moth (Grapholita funebrana). Their primary host plants include peaches, plums, apricots, apples, and pears. Larval feeding patterns are aggressive and often result in extensive yield loss.
The biological development involves a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The overwintering stage typically occurs as a fully grown larva in a silk cocoon, hidden in bark crevices or soil debris. Depending on the climate, these moths can produce several generations throughout the growing season.
Damage occurs when the newly hatched larvae bore into fruit or young shoots. In fruit, they tunnel towards the core, which leads to premature fruit drop and rot. When shoots are infested, the tips wilt and die back, which can severely stunt the growth of young trees in nurseries and orchards.
