Hawthorn fruit moth

The Hawthorn fruit moth (Grapholita janthinana) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a specialized pest primarily associated with the genus Crataegus (hawthorn), where it completes its entire larval development inside the developing fruit.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths typically emerge in late spring. Females deposit eggs individually on the surface of young fruitlets. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the fruit to feed on the interior tissues, which provides protection from environmental factors and predators.

The damage caused by Grapholita janthinana is significant for the host plant. Larval feeding inside the fruit destroys the pulp and seeds, leading to premature fruit drop and fruit deformation. This renders the crop unmarketable and reduces the overall reproductive success of the plant.

Understanding the biology of this pest is crucial for effective control. The larvae overwinter in silk-lined cocoons hidden within bark crevices or organic debris on the ground. Monitoring the emergence of adults via pheromone traps is standard practice for determining the optimal timing for protective interventions.

Recommended management practices include:

• Sanitation, including the collection and destruction of infested fallen fruit to stop larvae from pupating.
• Targeted application of insecticides timed to match the egg-laying and hatching periods of the moth.
