Pea moth

The Grapholita nebritana, widely recognized as the pea moth, is a destructive pest belonging to the Tortricidae family of the order Lepidoptera. It specifically targets leguminous crops, with pea being the most common host plant. The larvae of this moth are responsible for significant agricultural losses due to their habit of feeding inside the pods.

The biology of this species is synchronized with the phenology of the host crop. Overwintering occurs in the larval stage within cocoons buried in the soil. Adults emerge during the flowering and pod-setting stage of peas. Females deposit their eggs on the leaves or pods, and upon hatching, the young larvae tunnel into the pod to feed on the developing seeds.

Damage caused by the pea moth is characterized by boreholes on the pods and the presence of excrement and silk webbing inside. This feeding activity not only destroys the seeds but also exposes them to fungal infections and reduces their market value and germination potential. Severe infestations can result in up to half of the harvest being rendered useless.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this moth effectively. Early detection through pheromone monitoring systems allows farmers to time their interventions precisely. Because the larvae are protected once they enter the pod, timing the application of insecticides to coincide with the egg-laying period is crucial for success.

• Utilizing deep autumn plowing to expose overwintering larvae to predators and environmental stress.
• Selecting early-maturing pea varieties to shorten the exposure window.
• Strict adherence to crop rotation, ensuring a multi-year gap between pea plantings in the same field.
• Using pheromone traps for monitoring and mass trapping to reduce the adult population.
• Applying selective insecticides that target larvae before they gain entry to the pods.
