Cherry fruitworm

The cherry fruitworm (Grapholita packardi) is a destructive insect species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is widely recognized as a significant pest affecting various stone fruit crops, posing a constant challenge for both commercial growers and home gardeners.

This species primarily targets cherry and sour cherry trees, but can also infest plums and occasionally apple trees. The larvae cause direct damage by boring into the fruit, where they feed on the flesh, leading to internal decay and significant quality loss that renders the harvest unsalable.

The biological cycle of the cherry fruitworm typically involves multiple generations per year. The larvae overwinter in protected sites such as bark crevices or beneath debris on the orchard floor. After pupation in the spring, adult moths emerge and lay eggs on the developing fruit and surrounding foliage.

The damage caused by this pest is easily identified by the presence of small entry holes, often accompanied by frass accumulation on the fruit surface. Infested cherries often ripen prematurely and fall to the ground, significantly reducing the total yield and market value of the crop in infected orchards.
