Description
Systematic position: The rose fruit moth (Grapholita tenebrosana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Tortricidae. It is a specialized pest that specifically targets plants within the Rosaceae family, often causing significant economic losses in rose hip cultivation.
Host crops: This moth primarily infests various species of wild and cultivated roses (Rosa spp.). While the damage is most notable on rose hips, the presence of the pest can also affect the overall health and ornamental quality of rose bushes in nurseries and botanical gardens.
Biology and life cycle: The species typically completes one generation per year. Winter is spent as fully grown larvae inside cocoons located in the soil or beneath leaf litter near the host plant. Adult moths emerge in late spring, aligning with the flowering period. Eggs are deposited on developing fruit buds or sepals.
Nature of damage: The larvae penetrate the developing rose hips shortly after hatching. Inside the fruit, they feed on seeds and fleshy pulp, leaving behind frass (excrement). Infested fruits often turn dark, rot prematurely, and drop to the ground before they reach full maturity, rendering them useless for harvest.
Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential. Cultural practices such as cleaning debris and tilling soil around bushes help destroy overwintering cocoons. During the growing season, monitoring for moth activity is crucial. Chemical control using selective insecticides should be applied shortly after the petal-fall stage to target young larvae before they enter the fruit.
