Description
Gymnandrosoma is a genus of moths belonging to the Tortricidae family within the order Lepidoptera. These insects are recognized as significant pests in various agricultural sectors, particularly impacting fruit production in tropical and subtropical regions where they can cause extensive economic damage.
The primary host plants for Gymnandrosoma species include various fruit-bearing trees such as citrus, guava, and others. The larvae are the stage responsible for the damage, as they exhibit endophagous behavior, meaning they bore into the fruit to feed on the internal tissues, effectively destroying the crop from within.
The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited on the fruit surface. Once the larvae hatch, they immediately bore into the fruit to establish a protected feeding site. This cryptic behavior makes them difficult to target with conventional contact pesticides once they have penetrated the fruit.
The damage caused by these larvae is multifaceted. Direct feeding leads to fruit tissue destruction and promotes the ingress of pathogens, which cause fruit rot. Often, infested fruits drop prematurely, significantly reducing the yield. If the infestation occurs early in the fruit development, the loss is even more severe for the grower.
