Nut moth

Gymnandrosoma punctidiscanum is a species of moth belonging to the Tortricidae family. Within the order Lepidoptera, it is recognized as a significant pest of nut-bearing trees. This insect is primarily known for its ability to infest the fruits of crops such as walnuts and pecans, causing substantial economic losses in commercial orchards.

The host range of this pest is centered on various nut species. The larvae are the primary damaging stage, as they burrow into the husk and shell of the developing nut to feed on the kernel. This feeding behavior makes them highly destructive and difficult to target once they are established inside the fruit.

The life cycle of the moth is synchronized with the growth stages of its host plants. Females typically deposit eggs on or near the developing nuts. After hatching, the larvae immediately initiate their entry into the fruit. Depending on the climate, the species may go through multiple generations, with late-season generations often causing the most significant damage to the crop.

Damage symptoms include the internal decay of the nut kernel, premature fruit drop, and visible entry holes in the nut husks. These injuries not only reduce the quantity of the harvest but also impact the quality, as damaged nuts are prone to secondary contamination by fungi and bacteria, rendering them unmarketable.

To protect orchards from Gymnandrosoma punctidiscanum, growers implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. Effective measures include:

• Deploying pheromone traps for seasonal monitoring of moth flight activity.
• Strict orchard sanitation by removing infested fallen nuts.
