Gynaikothrips

Gynaikothrips is a genus of thrips within the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. This group includes several species, most notably Gynaikothrips ficorum, widely known as the Ficus thrips. These insects are significant pests that specialize in attacking various species of the Ficus genus, causing localized deformation of foliage through their feeding activities.

The primary host plants for Gynaikothrips are ornamental figs, especially Ficus benjamina and Ficus microcarpa. These pests are commonly found in greenhouse environments, nurseries, and indoor plant collections worldwide. Due to their small size and concealed lifestyle, they can establish significant populations before they are first detected by the grower.

The life cycle of Gynaikothrips follows a pattern of egg, larval stages, propupa, pupa, and adult. The cycle is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with warmer temperatures accelerating development. Adults and larvae prefer to feed on young, tender, and developing leaves, often causing the leaves to curl or fold, which creates a protective micro-environment for the entire colony.

The characteristic damage caused by these insects includes leaf rolling, curling, and the development of distinct galls. As the insects feed on the leaf tissue, the plant develops chlorotic spots, dark scarring, and eventually necrosis. Severe infestations cause leaf yellowing, stunting of new growth, and premature leaf drop, which severely degrades the health and aesthetic quality of the host plant.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for Gynaikothrips include:

• Pruning and safe disposal of heavily infested leaves to reduce the population density.
