Description
The Cuban laurel thrips (Gynaikothrips ficorum) is a member of the Thysanoptera order and the Phlaeothripidae family. It is a well-known pest that primarily affects Ficus microcarpa and other ornamental fig trees. These insects are microscopic, yet their collective feeding activity can cause significant damage to the host plant.
The life cycle of this pest consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs within the developing leaf tissue of the host plant. The total development time from egg to adult usually takes about three weeks depending on environmental conditions. Warm weather significantly accelerates their reproductive cycle, leading to rapid population growth.
The characteristic sign of an infestation is the curling and distortion of new leaves. As the thrips feed, they inject saliva into the leaf, causing the formation of distinct galls. These galls often turn from green to purple or reddish-brown as the leaves mature. Severe infestations lead to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a loss of the plant's aesthetic value.
Effective management requires early detection and consistent intervention. Because these thrips often feed inside the curled leaves, they are somewhat protected from direct contact sprays. Therefore, using systemic insecticides is often necessary to achieve adequate control by ensuring the poison reaches the insects as they feed on the plant sap.
