Weeping fig thrips

The weeping fig thrips (Gynaikothrips uzeli) is a significant pest belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. Originally from Southeast Asia, this species has become a global problem for botanical gardens, nurseries, and indoor plant collections, specifically targeting Ficus species.

This insect is primarily associated with the weeping fig (Ficus benjamina). Its host range is quite specific, as it relies on the development of young foliage to initiate its feeding and breeding behavior. By exploiting the soft tissue of developing leaves, the pest secures a niche that provides protection and essential nutrients.

The biological cycle of Gynaikothrips uzeli is highly adapted to the host plant. Females deposit eggs on the surface of young leaves. Once hatched, larvae begin feeding, which triggers the plant to form a leaf gall—a distorted leaf structure. The population can increase rapidly under warm, humid greenhouse conditions, leading to multiple generations per year.

Damage is characterized by leaf curling, spotting, and premature leaf drop. The presence of these galls inhibits photosynthesis and stunts the overall growth of the plant. If left untreated, severe infestations can lead to a significant decline in the health and aesthetic quality of the Ficus, making it susceptible to secondary infections.

Managing this pest requires a proactive strategy:

• Regular inspection and manual removal of infested leaves to lower the pest population.
• Application of systemic insecticides that translocate into the leaf tissue to reach hidden insects.
• Use of yellow sticky traps to monitor adult migration and activity.
• Maintaining proper environmental controls, including adequate ventilation and humidity levels.
• Integrating biological control agents, such as predatory mites or minute pirate bugs, where applicable.
