While often perceived as part of the natural forest ecosystem, they can cause significant damage to specific woody plants, acting as defoliators that impact plant health and growth.
Taxonomically, the genus Gynanisa is classified within the order Lepidoptera and the family Saturniidae. These moths are characterized by large wingspans with distinctive, eye-like markings. Their larvae, which are the primary destructive stage, possess specialized mouthparts that allow for the rapid consumption of large volumes of foliage, making them a concern for forest health management.
