Description
Taxonomic classification: The poplar shoot moth (Gypsonoma aceriana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a significant pest that specifically targets poplar species, causing severe damage in forest nurseries and urban ornamental plantings across its range.
Host plants: This pest primarily infests various species of the genus Populus. Among the most susceptible hosts are trembling aspen, black poplar, and various hybrid poplars. Young trees are particularly vulnerable, as the damage interferes with their primary vertical growth and structural development.
Biology and life cycle: The species completes one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in small cocoons tucked into bark crevices or near the base of buds. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge and bore into swelling buds to feed. After pupation within the damaged shoots, adult moths emerge in early summer to mate and lay eggs on the leaves or stems.
Nature of damage: The larvae are destructive to both terminal and lateral buds. After destroying the buds, they tunnel into the current year's shoots. This damage halts the vertical growth of the tree, often causing secondary branching and resulting in crooked or malformed trunks that are unsuitable for commercial timber use.
Control measures: Integrated pest management is essential for controlling Gypsonoma aceriana. Cultural practices, such as removing and destroying infested twigs before the emergence of adults, can significantly reduce the population. In nurseries, systemic or contact insecticides are most effective when applied exactly at the timing of larval emergence in the spring.
