Description

Systematic position: The cottonwood twig borer (Gypsonoma haimbachiana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a well-known pest that specifically targets plants within the Populus genus, significantly impacting forest health and the quality of saplings in commercial nurseries.

Host plants: The primary hosts are various species and hybrids of poplars and cottonwoods. While they primarily infest Populus, related species or adjacent trees may occasionally be affected if the infestation pressure in the immediate environment is high.

Biology and life cycle: The insect typically completes two generations per year. It overwinters as a late-instar larva within silk-lined cocoons hidden in bark crevices or near buds. During the spring, larvae pupate and emerge as adults. The second generation develops during mid-summer, causing the most severe damage to the current year's terminal growth.
