Poplar bud moth

Systematic position of the pest belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Tortricidae. Gypsonoma oppressana is a specialized species that primarily targets members of the genus Populus. Understanding the morphology and ecology of this species is crucial for forest management and the protection of urban decorative plantings.

Host plants mainly include various species of poplars, such as white poplar, black poplar, and aspen. During outbreaks, the larvae can cause significant damage to young trees in nurseries, parklands, and shelterbelts, reducing their aesthetic value and overall physiological resilience.

Biology and life cycle typically involve one generation per year. The overwintering stage is the larva, which hides in silken cocoons within bark crevices or under bud scales. In spring, as buds begin to burst, the larvae become active, boring into buds and young shoots, which leads to their premature wilting and disrupts the natural development of the tree.

Damage patterns and economic impact are characterized by the consumption of buds, followed by skeletonizing and rolling of leaves. The primary damage involves the destruction of terminal buds, which compromises apical dominance, causing the tree to branch out and lose its natural crown structure. High population densities can significantly weaken the trees, predisposing them to secondary attacks by other pests.

Protection measures include both preventive and corrective actions to manage population levels effectively:

• Application of systemic or contact insecticides in early spring when larvae emerge from hibernation sites.
• Sanitary maintenance of stands, including the removal and destruction of heavily infested shoots in early stages.
• Encouraging the presence of natural enemies, such as entomophagous insects and insectivorous birds, to naturally suppress pest populations.
• Utilization of biological control agents, including bacterial-based pesticides, during the period of peak larval feeding activity.
