Description

The poplar shoot borer (lat. Gypsonoma sociana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This pest is a specialized phytophage that primarily targets trees of the genus Populus, including common aspen, white poplar, and black poplar. It is a significant concern in both nursery settings and urban forestry, as it can cause extensive damage to young saplings and ornamental trees.

The life cycle of the moth consists of one generation per year. The insect overwinters as an early-instar larva, protected within a dense silken cocoon hidden in bark crevices or near the base of buds. In the spring, when buds begin to swell and open, the larvae emerge to feed on the tender tissue inside. By early summer, the larvae pupate within the spun leaves, and the adult moths emerge between June and July to mate and lay eggs.

The characteristic damage caused by the larvae involves spinning leaves together with silk to create protective "nests." Inside these structures, the larvae skeletonize the leaf blade, feeding on the parenchyma and leaving only the veins intact. A high infestation rate can lead to premature leaf drop, which impairs the tree's photosynthetic efficiency and weakens its overall physiological health.

The primary harm is caused by the destruction of both generative and vegetative buds, which may result in the death of terminal shoots. This leads to stunted growth and deformities in the branching structure of the tree. If the infestation persists over several consecutive seasons, the affected trees become highly susceptible to secondary pests, such as wood-boring beetles, due to their decreased vigor.

Control measures must be applied strategically, targeting the early spring emergence of larvae. Systemic insecticides are most effective when applied during the bud-burst stage. Biological control, including the use of Bacillus thuringiensis sprays, is recommended for sensitive environments. Maintaining tree vigor through proper silvicultural practices and encouraging natural predators, such as insectivorous birds and parasitic wasps, remains a key component of integrated pest management.
