Description

The genus Haematopinus, with Haematopinus suis being the most prevalent species, belongs to the order Phthiraptera and the family Haematopinidae. These insects are obligate hematophagous parasites that infest pigs, making them a significant issue for commercial swine producers worldwide.

The biology of the louse is closely tied to its host. The entire life cycle, from egg (nit) to adult, occurs on the pig. Adults are relatively large, wingless insects that feed on blood multiple times a day. Their life cycle is optimized for survival, as the eggs are cemented firmly to the hair follicles, protecting them from environmental fluctuations.

Infestation, known as pediculosis, causes severe pruritus (itching) due to the irritation from bites and the injection of saliva. As a result, infested pigs exhibit restlessness and incessant scratching, which causes skin lesions, crusting, and potential secondary bacterial infections. In severe cases, significant blood loss can lead to anemia and weakened immunity in piglets.

They have been implicated in the transmission of several viral and bacterial diseases in pigs, which can have devastating consequences for a farm's productivity and animal welfare standards.

Effective management strategies against these pests require a multi-faceted approach to break the infestation cycle:

  • Application of registered ectoparasiticides (topical sprays, pour-ons, or injections).
  • Thorough cleaning and disinfection of housing facilities to eliminate nits and adult lice in the bedding.
  • Implementation of quarantine and treatment protocols for all incoming stock.
  • Regular visual inspections of the herd, specifically focusing on the ears, neck, and inner thighs where lice cluster.
