Cattle tail louse

The cattle tail louse (Haematopinus quadripertusus) is an ectoparasitic insect belonging to the order Phthiraptera and the family Haematopinidae. This species is an obligate blood-feeder that specifically targets cattle, causing significant economic losses in the livestock industry by affecting the health and performance of the animals.

These lice exhibit a distinct site preference, usually clustering around the tail head, the anal region, and the udder. This localized behavior is a survival strategy, as these areas provide a degree of shelter from the host's grooming and environmental stressors, while also offering thinner skin for easier blood-feeding.

The life cycle of the cattle tail louse is entirely spent on the host animal. It undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, passing through egg (nit), nymphal, and adult stages. The female attaches her eggs firmly to the hair shafts. Under favorable conditions, the entire life cycle can be completed in approximately three weeks, allowing the population to build up rapidly if left unchecked.

Damage caused by Haematopinus quadripertusus is characterized by intense irritation and itching, which causes the cattle to scratch and rub against structures. This leads to hair loss, skin inflammation, and secondary infections. In severe cases, significant blood loss can lead to anemia, reduced feed intake, and stunted growth in calves, as well as reduced milk yield in dairy cows.

Effective management and control strategies include:

• Application of approved insecticides, such as pour-on formulations or sprays, containing synthetic pyrethroids or macrocyclic lactones.
• Ensuring the entire herd is treated simultaneously to prevent re-infestation from untreated animals.
• Maintaining good sanitation and regular monitoring of livestock for early signs of infestation.
• Strict quarantine procedures for incoming stock to avoid the introduction of parasites into the healthy herd.
