Systematic position: The Cleg (lat. Haematopota) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tabanidae. These insects are well-known blood-sucking pests that are widely distributed in temperate and humid regions, causing significant disturbance to livestock.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically lay large masses of eggs on vegetation near wet areas or marshes. The larvae develop in damp soil or decaying organic matter, feeding on other small organisms. The duration of the development cycle can extend over one or two years depending on temperature and humidity.
Damage and harmfulness: Clegs primarily affect agriculture by attacking farm animals, particularly cattle and horses. Unlike other pests, they do not damage crops, but their impact on livestock productivity is severe. Animals subjected to repeated bites experience high levels of stress, leading to weight loss, reduced milk yields, and potential secondary bacterial infections.
Disease transmission: Beyond physical pain and irritation, clegs are potential vectors for various diseases. They can mechanically transmit pathogens, such as the causative agents of tularemia and other zoonotic infections, between animals. Their saliva contains anticoagulants that prevent clotting, causing long-lasting open wounds susceptible to further infestation.
