Rabbit louse
Haemodipsus ventricosus
Description
Note: Haemodipsus ventricosus is not a plant pest, but rather a blood-sucking louse that specifically infests rabbits (Lagomorpha). In the context of small-scale livestock and farm management, it is classified as a significant veterinary pest that directly impacts the welfare and productivity of rabbit colonies.
Taxonomically, the species belongs to the order Phthiraptera and the family Hoplopleuridae. Unlike many other insects, this louse spends its entire life cycle on the host, anchored to the hair shafts. It is highly host-specific, meaning it rarely infests other species and relies entirely on rabbit blood for its nutrition.
The life cycle includes the egg (nit), nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs at the base of the hair, which are cemented firmly in place. Under optimal conditions, the entire development cycle takes about two to three weeks. Because they cannot survive for long periods away from the host, transmission occurs primarily through direct physical contact between rabbits or via shared contaminated equipment.
The damage caused by Haemodipsus ventricosus is characterized by intense pruritus, leading to severe scratching, skin lesions, and matted fur. Prolonged infestations often result in anemia, general weakness, and reduced immune function. In severe cases, the skin may become crusted or prone to secondary bacterial infections, significantly impacting the animal's physical condition.
Effective control measures include a combination of veterinary treatment and environmental sanitation:
- Topical application of safe, rabbit-approved insecticides such as spot-on treatments or dusting powders.
- Thorough cleaning and disinfection of cages, nest boxes, and grooming tools to eliminate stray lice.
- Implementing strict quarantine protocols for any new rabbits brought onto the premises to prevent introducing the pest.
- Regular health checks of the entire colony to identify and treat infestations promptly.
