Spined rat louse

The spined rat louse (Polyplax spinulosa) is an ectoparasite belonging to the order Phthiraptera and the family Polyplacidae. While it is primarily a parasite of rodents, it holds significant importance in agricultural management due to its association with rats, which are major pests in storage facilities and silos.

This parasite specifically targets species like the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the black rat (Rattus rattus). In agricultural environments, these rodents act as vectors for damage to stored grain and infrastructure. The presence of these lice is a clear indicator of rodent infestation, which must be addressed to maintain sanitary standards for stored crops.

The biology of Polyplax spinulosa is characterized by a development cycle occurring entirely on the host. The life cycle involves eggs (nits) attached to the hair, three nymphal stages, and adults. The entire process takes approximately three weeks. As blood-feeders, they remain strictly on the host and cannot survive for long periods in the environment without a blood meal.

The economic impact of this parasite is primarily related to its ability to act as a vector for various pathogens, including Rickettsia and Bartonella species. By facilitating the spread of diseases among rodent populations, these lice exacerbate the threat of biological contamination in grain warehouses, necessitating rigorous sanitary and control protocols.
