The genus Polyplax belongs to the order Phthiraptera and the family Polyplacidae. These organisms are highly specialized sucking lice that act as obligate ectoparasites on small mammals, primarily rodents. The biology of Polyplax is characterized by a rapid life cycle completed entirely on the host animal. The female lice deposit eggs, known as nits, onto the hair shafts. Once hatched, the nymphs undergo several molts while feeding on the host's blood.
