Description

The Garden fleahopper (Halticus citri) is a small insect belonging to the plant bug family (Miridae). Despite its common name suggesting a focus on citrus, it is a highly polyphagous pest that feeds on a diverse range of crops, including beans, soybeans, cucumbers, and tomatoes, causing significant economic damage in agriculture and horticulture.

This pest affects a wide array of vegetable and technical crops. It typically congregates on the underside of leaves, piercing the plant tissues and extracting sap. Due to its mobile nature and ability to jump when disturbed, it can quickly spread throughout a field, attacking tender foliage and causing stunted growth or complete loss of plant vigor.

The biological development of the pest involves several stages: egg, nymph, and adult. The lifecycle is highly influenced by climatic conditions, with higher temperatures leading to faster maturation. Adults are dark in color and possess strong jumping legs, which is a characteristic feature of this species. Populations usually peak in mid-summer when the environmental conditions are most favorable for reproduction.

The damage caused by Halticus citri is diagnostic, manifesting as small, white to pale yellow stippling on the leaves. These necrotic spots appear where the insect has punctured the epidermis and drained the cell contents. As damage progresses, the leaves may turn chlorotic, curl, and drop prematurely, drastically reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.
