Hanseniella

Hanseniella is a genus of symphylans (class Symphyla), commonly known as garden centipedes, which are significant soil-dwelling pests in various agricultural systems. Although they are not true insects, they are arthropods that can cause severe economic damage by feeding on the delicate root systems of developing crops.

Taxonomically, they belong to the family Scutigerellidae. These small, white, blind organisms thrive in moist, loose soils with high organic matter content. Their biology is highly dependent on environmental humidity; they migrate vertically through the soil profile to find optimal moisture levels, often appearing near the root zone of vulnerable plants.

They infest a wide range of plants, including vegetables, flowers, and nursery stock. The larvae and adults have chewing mouthparts capable of consuming root hairs and the tips of primary roots. This activity impairs the plant's ability to take up water and essential nutrients, leading to stunted growth or total plant failure.

The damage caused by Hanseniella is often underestimated because the insects remain underground. Infested plants typically exhibit poor vigor, yellowing leaves, and poor root development. Furthermore, the feeding wounds provide an entry point for soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary rot and further weakening the crop.
