Hanseniella ivorensis

Hanseniella ivorensis is a species of symphylan belonging to the family Scutigerellidae. These small, white, multi-legged soil arthropods are often referred to as "garden centipedes." They are highly mobile organisms that reside within the soil profile, utilizing existing pores and cracks to move in search of succulent plant tissues.

Geographically, this pest is primarily associated with tropical ecosystems, notably documented in Ivory Coast. It thrives in high-humidity environments rich in organic matter. Agricultural crops such as cocoa trees and various palm species are frequently targeted by this organism, particularly in nurseries or early stages of development where root systems are delicate.

The biology of Hanseniella ivorensis is characterized by a life cycle entirely dependent on soil moisture and temperature. Females deposit eggs in clusters within the soil, and larvae undergo a series of molts to reach maturity. Because they lack a waterproof cuticle, they are extremely susceptible to desiccation, which drives them to migrate vertically in the soil profile depending on moisture levels.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily subterranean, targeting the root hairs and lateral roots. By feeding on the tips of the root system, they severely impair the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients.
