Cotte's thrips (Latin: Haplothrips cottei) is a species of insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. As a specialized phytophage, it is known for its ability to colonize various grass species, including major cereal crops. In the context of agricultural entomology, it is recognized as a pest capable of causing significant yield losses if left uncontrolled during peak infestation periods.

This pest primarily targets cereals such as wheat, barley, and rye. Both larvae and adults extract sap from the plant tissues, focusing their activity in the leaf sheaths, stems, and developing ears. By feeding on the internal plant fluids, they disrupt normal physiological processes, leading to weakened plants and reduced overall vigor of the crop stands.

The life cycle of Haplothrips cottei includes stages of egg, two larval instars, pre-pupa, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters in the adult stage within crop residues, leaf litter, or sheltered areas near the soil surface. When temperatures rise in the spring, the adults migrate to emerging young cereals to initiate their first generation of the season.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by chlorosis (whitening) of leaves, stunted plant growth, and deformity of the ears. A heavy infestation can lead to withered grains and reduced yield quality. Because they often hide deep within the plant structure, their feeding activity may go unnoticed until visible symptoms of stress appear across the field, often necessitating timely intervention.
