Description

Systematic position. The grain thrips (Haplothrips graminis) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. It is a minute insect species that has adapted specifically to feed on cereal crops, establishing itself as a significant agricultural pest that impacts productivity in grain-producing regions worldwide.

Host crops and pest significance. This pest primarily targets cereal crops, including wheat, rye, barley, and oats, as well as various wild grasses that serve as alternative hosts. Both adult insects and larvae feed by piercing the plant tissues and sucking the cell sap from glumes, florets, and developing grains, which results in shriveled kernels and diminished harvest quality.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of the grain thrips consists of egg, larva, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or beneath crop residues. In the spring, they migrate to young cereal plants where females lay eggs on the developing ears. Depending on temperature and moisture conditions, the pest can complete one or two generations within a single growing season.

Damage symptoms. Feeding activity leads to localized discoloration of the ears and deformation of spikelets. A severe infestation often causes "white ear" symptoms, where the upper parts of the plant appear bleached. This damage disrupts the plant's nutrient transport, leading to reduced grain filling and, in high-density cases, significant yield loss that can reach substantial economic levels.
