Robust thrips
Haplothrips robustus
Description
Systematic position. The robust thrips (Haplothrips robustus) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Phlaeothripidae. This insect is recognized as a specific pest in cereal-growing regions, where it impacts the development of wheat, barley, and other small grains during the heading stage.
Crops and damage. The pest primarily targets cereal crops. Both adults and nymphs feed on the plant tissues, specifically targeting the spikes. By piercing the plant cells and extracting sap, they cause stunted growth of the spikelets and contribute to shriveled or empty grains, significantly reducing the overall yield quality.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Haplothrips robustus involves egg, larva, protonymph, nymph, and adult stages. The insect typically overwinters as an adult in crop residues or the top layer of the soil. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults migrate to growing cereal crops to feed and lay eggs, completing their life cycle as the host plants mature.
Economic impact. The pest's ability to cause damage is heightened by its small size and tendency to hide within the spike, making detection difficult. High populations can lead to significant yield losses and lower the market value of the grain. Furthermore, damaged tissues become more susceptible to fungal pathogens and secondary infections that further stress the plant.
Protection measures. Managing robust thrips requires a strategic approach focusing on both preventive and reactive measures:
- Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the pest's development cycle.
- Proper management of stubble and agricultural waste to reduce overwintering sites.
- Maintaining field hygiene by controlling weed grasses that can host the insects.
- Regular field monitoring during the heading stage of cereals.
- Applying authorized insecticides when population thresholds are exceeded to prevent crop damage.
