Description

Systematic position. Hapsilodema is a genus belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae (leaf beetles). These insects are known for their specialized feeding habits, often causing significant stress to plants by defoliating them during their vegetative growth stages.

Affected crops. The primary hosts for this pest include members of the Brassicaceae (cruciferous) family. Agricultural crops such as cabbage, rapeseed, radish, and mustard are particularly susceptible. Infestations can occur rapidly, especially in regions with favorable climatic conditions for the beetle's life cycle.

Biology and life cycle. Hapsilodema undergoes complete metamorphosis consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The adult beetles typically overwinter in the soil or under plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on host foliage and initiate the reproductive cycle, leading to the development of subsequent generations.

Damage and pest impact. The feeding activity of the adults causes distinct holes and irregular damage to the leaf surfaces, often referred to as shotholing. In severe cases, significant leaf tissue loss occurs, reducing the plant's capacity for photosynthesis. Larvae can also contribute to damage by feeding on roots or lower foliage, further weakening the plant and lowering overall yield quality.

Protection measures. Managing Hapsilodema requires an integrated approach to maintain pest populations below economic injury levels:

  • Implementing crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
  • Removing wild host plants, particularly cruciferous weeds, from fields and surrounding areas.
  • Employing deep plowing in autumn to expose overwintering stages to cold and predators.
  • Applying selective insecticides when monitoring indicates that population densities exceed the economic threshold.
