The multicolored Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Coccinellidae family. Originally native to eastern Asia, it has become a global invasive species. While it was once promoted as a biological control agent for aphids, its tendency to become a nuisance to humans and a pest to fruit crops has led to its classification as a significant agricultural threat in many regions.

This beetle affects a wide range of horticultural crops, posing a particular threat to commercial orchards and vineyards. During the late summer and autumn, when aphid populations decline, adults move onto ripening fruits. They penetrate the skin of grapes, apples, pears, and raspberries, creating feeding wounds that facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens and induce fruit decay.

The biology of Harmonia axyridis is characterized by high reproductive capacity and rapid development. A female can lay hundreds of eggs during her lifespan. The larvae and adults are highly mobile and voracious feeders. In warm climates, the species can produce multiple generations per season, allowing it to quickly build up its population density in agricultural landscapes.

The economic impact of the pest is significant, especially in viticulture. When lady beetles are harvested along with grapes, they can release hemolymph containing alkaloids, which taint the taste of wine with a bitter, nutty flavor. Furthermore, their presence on fresh-market fruit renders the product unsalable due to mechanical damage and the potential for rapid post-harvest spoilage.

Effective management strategies require a combination of monitoring and physical exclusion. Chemical control is often difficult because the damage occurs close to harvest time, posing residues risks.
