Description
The Puss moth (lat. Harpyia) is a genus of moths belonging to the family Notodontidae. These insects are well-known defoliators of deciduous trees, particularly those within the willow and poplar families. Their presence in orchards and urban forests can become problematic if the population density increases significantly during the summer season.
Systematically, the genus Harpyia falls under the order Lepidoptera. Adult moths have a distinct appearance with grey and white patterning that mimics tree bark, providing excellent camouflage. The larvae, or caterpillars, are particularly famous for their unique defensive mechanisms, including the ability to extrude red filaments from their tail-end appendages when threatened.
These pests primarily target species such as Salix (willow) and Populus (poplar). The caterpillars feed aggressively on the foliage, consuming large portions of the leaf blade. In cases of high infestation, the trees can suffer from severe defoliation, which hampers their growth, reduces vitality, and makes them more susceptible to subsequent secondary infections or environmental stress.
The biological cycle of the puss moth involves a complete metamorphosis including the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the surface of leaves, and after hatching, the larvae go through several developmental instars. The pupation phase typically occurs within a tough, bark-like cocoon constructed in crevices of the tree bark, where the insect remains dormant through the winter.
