Description
The genus Hedya belongs to the family Tortricidae, order Lepidoptera. These moths are recognized as significant pests in orchards, with Hedya nubiferana being one of the most notable species, causing economic damage to various fruit-bearing trees.
The primary hosts include pome fruits such as apple, pear, and quince, as well as stone fruits like cherry and plum. In nurseries and young orchards, infestations can lead to severe stunting of vegetative growth and loss of floral buds, directly impacting tree development.
The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The larvae hibernate during the winter months, typically hiding within silken cocoons nestled in bark crevices or under lichen. As temperatures rise in early spring, they emerge to feed on developing buds.
