Marbled orchard tortrix

The marbled orchard tortrix (Hedya nubiferana) is a significant moth species belonging to the family Tortricidae. It is recognized globally as a pest in temperate climate orchards, where its larvae feed on the foliage and reproductive structures of various fruit-bearing trees.

This pest has a broad host range, primarily targeting members of the Rosaceae family. The most commonly affected crops include apple, pear, cherry, plum, and apricot trees. Due to its adaptability, it can sustain populations in neglected orchards, hedgerows, and ornamental plantings, complicating control efforts in commercial fruit production.

The life cycle involves overwintering as second or third-instar larvae within silken hibernacula hidden in bark crevices or branch forks. In the spring, these larvae emerge to feed on developing buds. Following pupation within curled leaves or bark, the adult moths emerge in early to mid-summer, mate, and deposit eggs on the leaves, starting the cycle anew.

Damage caused by the marbled orchard tortrix is most severe in early spring when larvae destroy fruit buds, leading to stunted growth or total crop loss. Later in the season, larvae tie leaves together with silk, feeding from within these shelters. This feeding pattern causes leaf discoloration, skeletonization, and a reduction in the overall vigor of the host tree.

• Monitoring adult flight activity using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested twigs and leaves during the summer.
• Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids such as wasps and predatory mites.
