Hedya ochroleucana

Hedya ochroleucana, commonly known as a type of leafroller moth, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a well-known pest that primarily targets woody rosaceous plants, causing significant cosmetic and physiological damage to both gardens and orchards.

The host range of this moth is quite broad, including roses, wild and domestic brambles (Rubus), as well as various fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum, and cherry. The larvae feed on the developing buds, leaves, and occasionally young fruits, which can impact the overall yield and health of the plant.

Regarding its biology, the moth typically completes one generation per year. The larvae spend the winter in silken hibernacula located in bark crevices or among debris at the base of the plant. In the spring, they emerge to feed on opening buds and young foliage, maturing by early summer before pupating within the spun leaf rolls.

The damage is highly characteristic: larvae use silk to roll or fold leaves into shelters, where they consume the leaf tissue, leaving only the veins. This feeding pattern causes the leaves to curl, turn brown, and eventually drop. Severe infestations can result in stunted growth and a significantly reduced floral display in ornamental rose gardens.

Management of this pest involves cultural, biological, and chemical methods. Cultural practices, such as removing fallen leaves and pruning infested shoots in late winter, are vital to reducing the overwintering population. When infestations exceed acceptable levels, systemic insecticides applied during the early larval stage provide effective control.
