Description
The cotton bollworm (Heliothis armigera) is a major agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive polyphagous insects, causing substantial economic losses in both large-scale commercial farming and small-scale horticulture.
This species is highly polyphagous, capable of feeding on over 120 different plant species. Among its primary hosts are cotton, maize, tomatoes, sunflowers, soybeans, chickpeas, and various legumes. The larvae exhibit a strong preference for the reproductive structures of plants, which makes them particularly damaging to yield potential.
The biological cycle progresses through four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The number of generations per year depends heavily on climatic conditions, typically ranging from two to several generations in warmer regions. Pupation usually occurs in the soil, allowing the insect to survive harsh winter conditions in a state of diapause.
Damage symptoms often start with leaf skeletonization by young larvae, but the most severe damage is caused by older instars boring into fruits, buds, and seed pods. This feeding behavior not only destroys the edible or harvestable parts of the plant but also creates entry points for fungal and bacterial infections, leading to rapid decay.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Strategies include deep plowing to expose pupae to predators and environmental stress, the use of pheromone traps for monitoring populations, and the timely application of selective insecticides or biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis or parasitic wasps, to suppress larval populations.
