Heliothrips is a genus of insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These pests are widely recognized as greenhouse thrips that cause significant damage to ornamental plants, fruits, and vegetable crops. They are particularly known for their ability to thrive in controlled environments like greenhouses, though they can also be found outdoors in subtropical and tropical climates.

The host range of Heliothrips is very diverse. They are commonly found on citrus trees, grapes, azaleas, begonias, fuchsias, and various indoor plants. By clustering on the undersides of leaves, these insects avoid direct light and remain protected, which often allows their population to reach damaging levels before they are detected by the grower.

The life cycle of these insects consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Unlike some other pests, the pupal stages of some species may occur on the leaf surface or within the plant debris. They reproduce rapidly, especially in warm and humid conditions, which allows them to complete multiple generations throughout the year. Their unique method of parthenogenesis also contributes to their rapid population expansion.

The damage caused by Heliothrips is primarily mechanical and nutritional. By piercing the plant cells and sucking out the contents, they cause the formation of silver or bronze discoloration on the leaves.
