Description

Systematic position: Helopeltis theobromae belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. This pest is recognized as a major economic threat to various tropical plantations, primarily due to its specialized feeding habits on economically significant plants.

Host crops: The primary host is the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). Additionally, the pest affects tea bushes, cashew trees, and cotton, making it a highly adaptable polyphagous insect that causes widespread losses in plantation agriculture.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a life cycle consisting of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Females insert their eggs into the tender tissues of shoots or fruit. Under optimal conditions, the life cycle completes in approximately 3–4 weeks, leading to multiple generations throughout the year.

Nature of damage and economic impact: Both nymphs and adults pierce the epidermis of young fruits and shoots, injecting toxic saliva into the plant tissue. This causes localized necrosis, commonly known as "capsid spots." Severe infestations lead to fruit malformation, necrosis of the pod surface, and significant yield reduction.

Control measures: Management strategies include the application of systemic insecticides during peak infestation periods and regular pruning of infected shoots. Integrated pest management programs also prioritize the conservation of natural predators, such as predatory ants, which play a crucial role in regulating population density naturally.
