Affected host plants: The primary hosts for this species include various species of pines (Pinus). They show a marked preference for ponderosa pine and Jeffrey pine. While specialized, they can inhabit diverse forest ecosystems, making them a recurring concern for forest health management and timber industry productivity.
Biology and lifecycle: The insect typically completes one generation per year. The lifecycle begins with an overwintering egg stage, deposited in masses on bark or old cocoons. Larvae emerge in the spring and undergo several instars of feeding. After reaching maturity, the caterpillars spin silken cocoons to pupate before emerging as adult moths to mate and lay eggs for the next cycle.
